Construct the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Station (JNHS), also known as the Rufiji Hydroelectric Power Project (RHHP) or Stiegler's Gorge Dam, on the Rufiji River in eastern Tanzania
The plant is expected to have an installed capacity of 2,115 MW (equivalent to 2,836,000 horsepower) and generate 5,920 GWh of electricity annually
The main works include constructing:
- A main roller compacted concrete dam, with a total length of 1,025 metres at crest level and 130 metres at dam level
- Four saddle dams with lengths of 1.4 km, 7.9 km, 4.6 km and 2.6 km and a capacity to impound 33 billion cubic metres of water
- A power station with nine turbines, each with a capacity of 235MW
- A 400 kV substation, with transmission lines linking to the national grid
Other civil works include the construction of:
- About 21 km of permanent access roads and 59 km of temporary access roads
- Administrative and control buildings, workshops and stores
- A 660-metre-long diversion tunnel and two coffer dams
- A permanent concrete bridge over the Rufiji River
- A residential housing complex
