The Burundi Transport Resilience Project is a major infrastructure initiative designed to improve efficient, safe, and climate-resilient road connectivity along the main corridor linking Burundi with Tanzania, while also strengthening institutional capacity for sustainable road asset management. The project includes the following:
- Rehabilitation and upgrading of road sections, particularly the Bujumbura-Gitaza Road and sections of Ndadaye and Mwambutsa boulevards, with a focus on meeting technical, environmental, safety, and social specifications.
- Rehabilitate or upgrade 25 km of the Bujumbura-Gitaza road section to climate-resilient standards by December 2026.
- Construction and upgrading of pilot road sections (target: 4 km by December 2027) to include dedicated facilities for non-motorized transport, such as pedestrian walkways and bicycle lanes.
- Implementation of major road safety activities, including a safety audit for the Bujumbura-Gitaza Road, and piloting a crash recording and analysis tool for improved safety monitoring.
- Construction of social infrastructure within the project area, with a target of five social infrastructure projects by December 2027.
- Technical assistance and preparatory work for a multinational railway project (standard gauge railway) linking Tanzania and Burundi, although physical construction of the railway is not part of the current scope.
