Sahel Backbone Power Interconnection Line
(Also known as the Sahel Dorsal High Voltage Interconnection Project and Trans-Sahel Spine)
- Build a double-circuit, high-voltage power interconnection line linking Burkina Faso, Mali, Mauritania, Niger and Chad; the project is part of the overall Desert-to-Power West Africa Regional Energy Programme - Phase 1
Over 6,000 km of transmission line is expected to be constructed
- The line connecting Mauritania and Mali is already under construction – the work entails building a 1,373 km line running from Kayes in Mali through Kiffa to Aioun in Mauritania (view the project here)
- The interconnection is intended to enable the development of renewable power plants and universal access to electricity
