The Government of Tanzania and the Tanzania Railway Corporation are expanding the Standard Gauge Railway Tabora-Kigoma Line (SGR), specifically Lot 6. This project involves constructing a new electrified standard gauge track from Tabora to Kigoma, designed for mixed traffic use. The expansion covers 506 kilometers of railway line, including 411 kilometers of mainline and 95 kilometers of branch lines.
The project will include the construction of 10 passenger stations and two freight stations in Uvinza and Katosho. This new railway line in western Tanzania will connect to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Rwanda, and Uganda, forming a 2,561-kilometer rail corridor. It will also provide access to maritime transport through the Port of Dar es Salaam and the port city of Mwanza on Lake Victoria.
