Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) is embarking on the development of the Ethiopia-Djibouti Second Power Interconnection Project: Phase 2, in Ethiopia. This project aims to establish a 230 kV transmission interconnection from Semera, Ethiopia to Nagad, Djibouti, which is deemed the most effective means to augment Djibouti's clean and cost-efficient power supply by over 30%. Furthermore, it will enable Ethiopia to enhance foreign exchange revenue from power trade while reducing Djibouti's reliance on fossil fuel-generated electricity. The project entails: (i) construction of a 230 kV double circuit Transmission Line spanning 292 km (102 km in Ethiopia and 190 km in Djibouti), with each circuit capable of transferring 160 MW; (ii) extension of the existing Semera 230 kV Substation in Ethiopia and the 230/63/20 kV substation at Nagad in Djibouti; (iii) reinforcement of the existing 230 kV transmission line between Kombolcha-Mile to Semera, spanning 170 km, alongside the construction of a new 230 kV substation at Mile and extensions of existing substations in Kombolocha and Semera, all in Ethiopia; and (iv) Last mile connections in Djibouti. The project has been divided into six lots to facilitate efficient execution.
