Tanzania Electric Supply Company Limited (TANESCO) is planning to construct 87.8MW Kakono Hydropower Project (HPP), which is part of Tanzania's economic growth strategy outlined in FYDP III. The project is a run-of-river hydropower plant using 44MW Kaplan turbines, and when completed will address electricity deficits in the Kagera, Geita, and Mwanza regions, particularly in the Lake Zone.
The project scope involves the construction of a 42m high and 1,380m long concrete-faced rockfill dam, a 61m high and 284m long gravity roller-compacted concrete dam, an above-ground power station, an adjacent substation, a 39km long 220kV high voltage transmission line and a 220kV/33kV substation at Kyaka, where the electricity generated will be fed into the national grid.
