Project Pipeline

(Also known as Projet d'Accroissement de l'Accés å I 'Energie au Tchad)

• The project aims to increase access to electricity from around 6% today to 30%, or around 1 million households electrified by 2027, primarily through the private sector
• This will be achieved through grid densification in the city of Ndjamena, installation of mini-grids in secondary cities and the implementation of standalone solar systems (SSA) in rural areas
• In addition, the project will increase energy access for refugees and their host communities through SSA, mini-grids and clean cooking solutions. Mini-grids and SSA will serve as an electrification solution in localities that will later be connected to the national electricity grid
• According to the World Bank, through PAAET, more than 6 million people will benefit from electricity services, including 400,000 refugees and approximately 740,000 people from host communities. The project will also provide electricity to approximately 850 medical centres and 700 schools, mainly in rural areas, including 150 medical centres and 200 schools for refugees and host communities
• The PAAET includes five components, two of which are related to electricity:
  Component 1: Electrification via networks
• Sub-component 1.1: Developing access to electricity in N'Djamena
• Sub-component 1.2: Extension of access to electricity in 12 secondary cities – Abeche, Biltine, Bol, Bongor, Doba, Faya, Koumra, Mao, Massaguet, Massakory, Moundou and Sarh
  Faya will benefit from 1.5 MW solar + 3 MW battery energy storage system (BESS); Koumra 2 MW solar + 6 MW BESS; Mao 4 MW solar + 8 MW bess; Massaguet 1.5 MW solar + 3 MW BESS; Massakory 1.5 MW solar + 3 MW BESS
• Sub-component 1.3: Electrification of secondary cities and additional urban areas
  Component 2: Electrification via Standalone Solar System (SSS)
• Sub-component 2.1: Access to electricity for productive uses and households
• Sub-component 2.2: Electrification of public entities
   
•  The project will be supported by the World Bank, with a grant from the International Development Association (IDA) of USD 250 million, of which USD 50 million will come from the IDA Window dedicated to refugees and host communities
• PAAET is part of a three-phase programmatic approach that aims to support the government of Chad in increasing the country's electricity access to 90% by 2030. Phase 2 and 3 projects will be determined during the implementation of Phase 1 of the programme
