Rehabilitation of Zongo-Kisangani-Kampala-Bujumbura Road Corridor
- Rehabilitate the estimated 2,700 km Zongo-Kisangani-Kampala-Bujumbura trade corridor, also known as Corridor 14 (CD14), which connects Zongo in northwestern DRC on the border with the Central African Republic (CAR) to Kisangani in north-central DRC and on to Kampala, the capital of Uganda, and Bujumbura, capital of Burundi
The work includes the construction of a 645-metre bridge over the Ubangi River between Bangui (capital of CAR) and Zongo, which will extend CD14 to reach CAR
In addition, access routes will be built on both sides of the bridge – 645 metres on the Bangui side and 850 metres on the Zongo side
A 20km road will also be constructed that connects the RN1 from the CAR side and a 13km connection to the town of Zongo from the DRC side
The CD14 project will also cover the development of missing links on the corridor as well as rehabilitation works
The overall project has an estimated cost of US$3.5 billion
The corridor is an important link in Trans-African Highway 3 (TAH 3), which links Nigeria’s port city of Lagos on the Atlantic Ocean to Kenya’s Port of Mombasa on the Indian Ocean, through the interconnection of the transport networks of Central and East Africa
