The Maputo Metropolitan Area (AMM), encompassing Maputo, Matola, Boane, and Marracuene, is undergoing significant urban mobility improvements, primarily centered around the development of a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system.
- BRT System Construction: The construction of a 22 km segregated BRT corridor, rehabilitation of mixed-traffic lanes, new terminals, stations, bus stops, and the installation of electrical and ICT systems for passenger information and fleet management.
The network will feature six routes to be serviced by 100 electric buses, in addition to 10 terminals and a depot
In late November 2024, the ministry invited interest from consultants for the design and supervision of the depot works, with a deadline of 20 December 2024. The consultancy would be engaged for a duration of 23 months, with an additional 1-year defect liability period
The BRT system will have the capacity to transport 4,000 passengers an hour, with annual ridership estimated at around 40 million people
- Road and Facility Upgrades: The rehabilitation and widening of access roads, improved lighting, pedestrian routes, cycling lanes, paved roads, and water drainage systems
In Maputo, rehabilitation and paving works are being carried out on Avenida 24 de Julho, between Praça 16 de Junho and Avenida da Zambia, including Avenida da Tanzania, over a length of 3.2km, along with Avenida da ONU and the connections to Avenidas Fernao de Magalhaes and 25 de Setembro, over an approximate length of 1.7km. Works are at the final stage of completion
In Matola, construction and rehabilitation works are being undertaken on the Molumbela-Khongolote road over 2km, as well as construction of a 6.7km road between Boquisso and Intaka across 6.7km and a 5.5km road between Matlhemele and Mwamatibjawana
