The Kenya Transmission Network Improvement project is a national infrastructure initiative aimed at increasing the reliability and efficiency of Kenya’s electricity supply, with a strong focus on integrating green energy sources and supporting socio-economic development. The project involves constructing new high-voltage (HV) transmission lines, developing associated substations, and extending existing substations to accommodate increased capacity and new renewable energy inputs
- Transmission Lines: The project includes the construction of several new high-voltage transmission lines, such as the 128-mile, 400-kV Gilgil-Thika-Malaa-Konza line and the 43-mile, 132-kV Menengai-Olkalou-Rumuruti double-circuit line, among others.
- Substations: At least three new substations, including a 132-kV Thurdiburo substation and a 400/220/132kV station at Rongai
- Project Coverage: The targeted areas for improvement and expansion include counties in Western Kenya (Laikipia, Baringo, Keiyo Marakwet, Uasin Gishu, Nandi, Narok, Bomet, Nyamira, Kisii, Migori, Homa Bay) and the Coastal region (Kilifi)
