The Green and Resilient Expansion of Energy (GREEN) Program Phase 2 in Kenya is an infrastructure initiative aimed at expanding the country's capacity to absorb and transmit renewable energy, particularly from intermittent sources such as wind and solar, and to facilitate increased imports of renewable energy from neighboring countries.
- Two STATCOM Installations: At Suswa and Rabai substations, which are critical for grid stability and integrating renewable energy.
- 400/220kV Kimuka Substation: Construction of a major new substation at Kimuka, including associated Loop In Loop Out (LILO) transmission lines. This substation will enhance connectivity between the Kenya-Tanzania and Ethiopia-Kenya interconnections.
- Battery Energy Storage System (BESS): Installation of utility-scale battery storage, likely at existing substation locations, to support grid reliability and renewable energy integration.
- Technical Assistance and Capacity Building: Funding for sector studies, project management, and capacity building to support implementation and future renewable energy auctions
