The Bumba–Aketi–Buta–Mungbere (also known as Uélés-Rivers) Railway Line Rehabilitation and Modernization project is a strategic infrastructure initiative aimed at restoring and upgrading a critical rail corridor in the northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Originally constructed between 1924 and 1937, this historic railway line spans several hundred kilometers across the Mongala and Uélé provinces, connecting the river port city of Bumba to the eastern town of Mungbere via Aketi and Buta. The railway was once vital for transporting agricultural produce, minerals, and passengers but has been largely non-operational due to decades of neglect and conflict-related damage.
This project seeks to rehabilitate and modernize the railway infrastructure to facilitate efficient, safe, and sustainable rail transport. Key activities include comprehensive track repairs, upgrading signaling and telecommunications systems, and implementing modern operating standards. The rehabilitation will improve domestic rail connectivity, foster economic development by opening up the eastern regions rich in natural resources, and support the integration of the DRC’s transport network.
The initiative is guided by the DRC government’s Ministry of Transport and Communication Routes, which has issued an international call for expressions of interest from qualified partners. The project aims to attract experienced rail operators and investors to ensure long-term sustainability and operational excellence. Ultimately, the revitalized railway will enhance regional trade, provide reliable freight and passenger services, and contribute to socio-economic growth in a region historically underserved by transport infrastructure.
