The electricity sector in Niger has undergone significant changes over time. Initially, the company "Energie AOF" was responsible for the supply of electricity to Niamey. It later became SAFELEC, then NIGELEC, a company majority-owned by the state, responsible for the production, transmission and distribution of electricity throughout the country.
