The National Housing Corporation (NHC) is a statutory body established under an Act of Parliament, Cap. 117, with the primary mandate of playing a principal role in the implementation of the Government of Kenya’s housing policies and programs.
The origins of the NHC trace back to 1953 when the Colonial Government of Kenya established the Central Housing Board through the Housing Ordinance. This Board served as the main vehicle for promoting the development of housing for Africans during the colonial era. In 1959, the Board's activities were expanded to include housing initiatives for Europeans and Asians, reflecting the broader needs of the population.
By 1965, the Board took on the responsibility of directly constructing dwellings in areas where local authorities were either unable or unwilling to do so. In the same year, an amendment to the Housing Ordinance of 1953 led to the establishment of the National Housing Corporation (NHC), replacing the Central Housing Board and solidifying its role as the key institution in the housing sector.
