The statutory specification and establishment of government ministries and agencies in Liberia aim to create opportunities for specialization, thereby achieving maximum gross output in administering the economic, political, and engineering components of the state as a single unit.
In line with the government’s objective to achieve national goals cohesively, the Department of Public Works was established by an Act of the National Legislature in 1928. It was later renamed the Ministry of Public Works in 1972 to better administer the engineering component of the state. This includes responsibilities such as surveying, drafting/designing, construction, and supervision. The Ministry is tasked with improving and maintaining all highways, bridges, roads, streets, airports, seaports, and other public infrastructure in the Republic of Liberia, either directly or through contracts.
